St
Marys says farewell to Director of Music, Alison Appleyard, and
Organist Tim Appleyard
The 10.30am Candlemas service saw Alison and Tim lead the music
at St Marys for the last time, after seven years in their respective
roles of Director of Music and Organist.
It was an emotional time for the choir after the years of patience
exhibited by these two wonderful musicians in instilling into
them some form of musical discipline and tunefulness. Once the
choir had grasped the concept that it was actually possible to
sing in Latin and make a reasonable job of it, Tollite Hostias
became their unofficial anthem. Under Alison's guidance a serviceable
repertoire was built up and over the years some quite challenging
work was performed at the monthly Festival Services.
At the end of the service the choir paid tribute to Alison and
Tim by a surprise performance of a Celtic Blessing, set to music
written by Alison, and accompanied by Marianne East on the organ.

Sunday Procession |

March 2010
Our
new Vicar meets Humphrey for the first time. |
| |
 |
On
a gloriously sunny, but chilly, March morning, the vicar lead
the hardier members of the congregation from the scout hut
to the church for the annual Palm Sunday procession, ably
assisted by Humphrey. However, he (Humphrey) was somewhat
restless, and so and it was thought best that he remain outside
the church, rather than take a fuller part in the service
as he had done in previous years. |

Welcome
to our new Vicar
|
|
| |
On
Thursday 25th February the Reverend Stuart
Michael East was installed, and welcomed by parishioner
as the new vicar of St Mary's. Under the authority of the Bishop
of Whitby, himself a newly appointed suffragan Bishop, and in
a packed church, the acting Archdeacon performed the ceremony
of induction and installation (Stuart rang the bell ten times),
and the period of interregnum came to an official end.
The
service was followed by a lavish Pooled Supper, masterminded by
the Mothers' Union, at St Mary's Church Hall, which gave the parishioners
their first chance to meet with their new vicar and his family,
and also their new Bishop.
